Maple Hill

Obituary

Rachel Powers Sholar, age 92, of Maple Hill, NC passed away peacefully at home on Monday September 28, 2026.

She was born on June 11, 1934, to the late K. S. Powers (Sheriff of Pender County 1962-1978), and Hester Armstrong Powers. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leon Harold (Sam) Sholar (1979), in-laws, McLeon and Mildred Andrews Sholar, sisters-in law, Doris Hartley Powers, Anna Maude Sholar, Shelby Sholar Hunter and brother-in-law, James Hunter.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Frank Dixon of Maple Hill, daughter, Sherrel Sholar Bunn (Eddie) of Wilmington, sons Kent Sholar (Judy) of Raleigh, Todd Sholar of Wallace, Granddaughters, Jill Henderson Morris (Will) of Wilmington, Jade Sholar Cole (Chance) of West Jefferson, Melissa Bunn (Eric) of Wilmington, grandson Jason Bunn (Angie) of Mocksville, great-granddaughters, Sydney Morris of Wilmington, Rosalie Cole of West Jefferson, daughter-in-law Bonita Cavenaugh of Wallace, brother, Jimmie Powers of Kinston, brother-in law and sister-in-law, Jim and Jackye Sholar of Dunn, NC, and nieces and nephews.

Rachel was devoted to her family and friends, and especially proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her face would light up with a smile, when she looked at pictures of her family. She loved her Lord and had a deep belief in angels. She loved old timey hymns, gardening, arranging flowers, watching redbirds in the backyard, and blue birds in the front yard, reading books, playing the piano and sharing her pictures of beautiful sunsets. She also loved her doggy companions, Scamp and Lacey. She was forever faithful in sending greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, get well wishes, thinking of you cards, and in sympathy – all with personal handwritten notes. She was a member of the Maple Hill Presbyterian Church, attended Flora MacDonald College and retired from Scotchman Stores.

At Rachel’s request, no public services will be held. Her family will honor her wishes with a private celebration of life, and the scattering of her ashes in nature. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Mt. Williams Cemetery (Perpetual Care Fund) 2110 NC Hwy 53 West, Burgaw, NC 28425 (make check to Mt. Williams Cemetery) or a charity of one’s choice. Rachel’s love for her family, her faith, and her simple acts of kindness will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
