Mamie Lee Council, age 95 of Burgaw passed peacefully Friday October 30, 2026 at Poplar Grove Memory Care of Burgaw.

She was born April 15, 1931 in New Hanover County daughter of the late Homer and Leona Sasser Council Sr. She was also predeceased by siblings, Elizabeth Ellington Council Mule’, Homer Leslie Council, and John Cecil Council.

Survived by her niece Kerri Council McHenry, and her husband Bill, who she affectionately referred to as "the alien" of Burgaw, along with two additional nieces, Melanie Cooper of Hartwood, VA and Nicole Mule' of Santa Rosa, CA, and two nephews Tony Schlagel (Tracy) of Midlothian, VA and Jason Mahle of Wilmington.

Mamie graduated from New Hanover High School in 1950. She enjoyed life with a feisty and humorous spirit. She was a people person, very independent, financially savvy and very smart. Mamie enjoyed being at cookouts with Kerri and Bill, being in the sun and soaking up vitamin D. She enjoyed animals and watching wildlife of all kinds. She liked her time at home and enjoyed listening to the radio. With Mamie’s outgoing personality, she was referred to as a “Rock Star” by friends and staff at Poplar Grove.

The family will receive friends from 4-6:00PM Friday November 6, 2026 at Harrell’s Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday November 7, 2026 at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Wilmington.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Poplar Grove Memory Care and Gentiva Hospice for the amount of love and compassion shown to Mamie.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Pender County Humane Society.
