Jacquelyne Gordon Robbins, age 83 of Penderlea, died Sunday August 15, 2010 at Pender Memorial Hospital.
She was born August 4, 1927 in Greer, SC daughter of the late William David Gordon and Lois Wooten Gordon. She was predeceased by her husband William Dudley Robbins, Sr. and her youngest brother, David Blair Gordon.
Survivors include sons, William Dudley Robbins Jr. (Bill) and wife Susan of Penderlea, Wilfred Lee Robbins (Red) and wife June of Burgaw, Martin Gordon Robbins (Marty) and wife Susan Marie of Wilmington, James Thomas Robbins (Jimbo) and wife Heidi of Penderlea; six grandchildren, William Dudley Robbins III, Patrick Sherman Robbins, Abby Lee Robbins, Zachary Gordon Robbins, Andrew Martin Robbins, Camille Marie Robbins; a brother Paul Lee Gordon of Sparta, NC; nieces Jacquelyne Lee Gordon Isner of Sparta, Carolyn Robbins of Burgaw; nephews, William Stephen Gordon of Lenoir, David Blair Gordon Jr. of Key West FL, Gregg Scott Gordon of Gainesville, GA, and Thomas Jennette Robbins Jr. of Burgaw.
Jackie's family moved to Cramerton, NC in 1931 where she graduated from High School in 1944. In 1949 she received her B.S. degree from Appalachian State Teachers College. During her college years she served on the newspaper staff, yearbook staff, and drama club. Jackie was a majorette for the college band and was elected May Queen representative. After completing her practice teaching in business education she was selected as an Honor Teacher. She came to Burgaw High School to teach Business and Social Studies in 1949 where she met her future husband and was married in 1952. After teaching several years she chose to stay home with their four sons. In 1967 she returned to her teaching career at Penderlea High School and in 1975 was transferred to Pender High School as a charter staff member where she taught until her retirement. She was a senior advisor at Penderlea and Pender High Schools. She was a continuing member of the NEA, the NCAE Classroom Teachers Association and the Pender County NCAE. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society for outstanding teachers.
After retiring, Jackie was appointed to the Advisory Council Long-Term Elder Care for Pender County. She was a 44 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary #165 and a member of the Pender County Historical Society, the Penderlea Historical Society, and the Pender County Retired School Personnel. Her most cherished award was being selected by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at NCSU as "Mother of the Year"
Jackie was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Burgaw where over the years she served as a Church School Teacher, Vestry Member, Episcopal Church Woman, and on the Alter Guild.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Burgaw. The Reverend J. Robert Spainhour will officiate. Burial will follow in the Burgaw Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at Harrell's Funeral Home.
