Obituary

Eugene Allen Gregg, 91, of Wilmington, passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born October 27, 1930, in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Alfred and Ethel Gregg.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty, two children, Aimee Mitchell and husband Tollie of Burgaw and Keith Gregg and wife Denise of Mooresville, and six grandchildren, Caroline Boese, Garrett Gregg, Perrie Gregg, Lauren Gregg, Ren Gregg, and Sydney Gregg. He was predeceased by a brother, Curt and a sister, Beverly.

Gene served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps and also the U.S. Air Force, completing two tours of duty in Korea. In his early years, Gene enjoyed driving in road rallies in his beloved MG. For his career, Gene was on the leading edge of the then-developing field of computers and information technology, working for the space program at Cape Canaveral, FL, during the Apollo space missions. On the home front, Gene was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He and Betty worked hard to make a great life for their family across multiple cross-country moves, including some moves to farms where they raised cattle and rode horses and some moves to towns. Gene was extremely handy and extensively remodeled several of their homes. He loved his hobbies, including boating, racing homing pigeons, photography and competitive target shooting. In his retirement, Gene learned to do taxes, then served as a volunteer tax preparer for the elderly and needy for many years. He also enjoyed building computers for his extended family. Gene especially loved woodworking and made fine furniture and many gorgeous hand-turned wooden bowls. He was also quietly generous, helping people in need and contributing to many charities.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Doug Lukens will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at 2 pm at Harrell's Funeral Home followed by light refreshments.
