Eleanor Johnson
Dunn
Jun 17, 1926 — Aug 21, 2021
Burgaw
Eleanor Johnson Dunn, 95, passed away peacefully at New Hanover Regional Medical Center on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Eleanor was born June 17, 1926 in Columbia SC. Her late parents are Wofford Jeddy and Annie Jane LeGette Johnson. She was married 70 years to Lewis Franklin Dunn, who passed away January 19, 2019. Eleanor is also predeceased by her siblings, Mary Margaret Johnson, Wofford Jeddy Johnson, Jr. and Annie Johnson Dermid.
When she was 3, Eleanor's family moved to Charlotte NC, where she lived until her marriage. She graduated from Central High School in 1944 and attended Queens College from 1944-1947. She was a voice/piano major and an accomplished, beautiful soprano. She sang in numerous choirs, concerts and plays over the years and was often requested to sing at weddings and funerals. Throughout the years she served many churches in positions of choir director and/or secretary: Garner (NC) Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church (Raleigh NC), Trinity Methodist Church (New Bern NC), First Presbyterian Church (New Bern NC), Louisburg College (Louisburg NC), and Burgaw Presbyterian Church (Burgaw NC). She also established and directed the handbell choir at Burgaw Presbyterian. After retiring, Eleanor served as Assistant and Teacher for the Playschool at Burgaw Presbyterian. One of her greatest joys was seeing the many children with whom she worked grow up to become successful adults.
Surviving Eleanor are her son David Dunn; daughter Judy Dunn Scroggs and husband John; son Robert Dunn and wife Melanie; granddaughter Melody Dunn Jenkins and husband Jason; grandson Eric Dunn; granddaughter Courtney Dunn King and husband Geoff; and treasured great-grandson Cassidy King. Also, sister-in-law Polly Johnson, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and their families.
Eleanor loved the beach, choir performances, red roses, a good sermon, a rousing game of Rummikub, doing the puzzles in the Star-News, sending greeting cards to loved ones, and most of all babies and children. She leaves her family and friends with wonderful memories and a legacy of music and love.
A graveside service and internment will be 11:00 am September 11 at Burgaw Cemetery, 200 East Wallace Street. Due to COVID concerns the family requests that facemasks be worn.
