Donald Frederick Carlson, age 84 passed peacefully Saturday July 23, 2022 at New Hanover RMC surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 18, 1938 in Minneapolis MN, son of the late Frederick & Florence Carlson. He was also predeceased by a sister, Florence Moruss, a child, baby Carlson, and nephew, Roy Moruss. Plus, PawPals, Mangie and Misfit. Grand PawPals, Clovus and Buddy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Catherine Weidler Carlson; two daughters, Traci Smith & husband David of CA, and Marilyn Blair & husband Terrence of NC; four grandchildren, Jared, Michael, Jacob, and Danielle; three great grandchildren, Michael Jr., Sean and Adi. Along with, niece in law Cheryl and nephew, Jim & wife Sherry. Plus, pawpal Dusty and his grand pawpals, Cruz and Bella.

Donald was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving honorably for 31 years in the United States Navy. He served for four years aboard the USS White Plains. He worked at Chesapeake College security for twenty one years.

Donald loved his family and especially his dog Dusty. He enjoyed his double retirement by going to yard sails and auctions.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Donald was a proud member of LegalShield & IDShield.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday July 30, 2022 at Harrell's Funeral Home Chapel. Full military honors will be accorded by the United States Navy. The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
