Edna James Pullen

Edna James Pullen, age 93, died on Wednesday January 23, 2013. She passed away peacefully at her home in Burgaw, NC. Born on July 14, 1919 in Duplin County, she was the daughter of the late Annie Hawes and Oscar Hale James. She was predeceased by her brothers, Homer James and Lionel James, and her husband of 63 years, Charles Thomas "Punch" Pullen. She is survived by her son, Charles Thomas Pullen, Jr. and wife, Mary Howard Pullen, of Wilmington; three granddaughters and their husbands, Mary Christen and Ben Szafran of Wilmington, Ann Ligon and Joel Morton of Georgetown, Bahamas, and Edna Catherine and David Yearwood of Wilmington; four great-grandsons, Caleb Joel Morton, Mason James Morton, Hagen Asher Morton, and Cohen Thomas Szafran; two sisters, Ann James Herring of Rose Hill, and Fanester James Gregory of Atlanta, Ga. Edna was also blessed with many beloved nieces and nephews. After graduation from East Carolina University, Edna taught elementary school in several school districts, but often expressed her pride at having taught fifth grade classes in Burgaw schools for over 30 years. She always reveled in meeting former students who recanted memories of days in her classroom. In addition to their home in Burgaw, Edna and "Punch" loved to spend time at their home at Wrightsville Beach, NC. This was a gathering place for many summer outings and family reunions for the entire extended family, providing memories for several generations. They also enjoyed playing golf, being members of several local courses and playing throughout Florida. Edna was a long time member of Burgaw Baptist Church. She enjoyed her teaching expertise in several capacities at the church, and created a generational legacy by the teaching of her faith to her granddaughters. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Burgaw Baptist Church. Reverend Nathan Morton will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 1:00 p.m., at the family home in Burgaw. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to be sent to Burgaw Baptist Church P.O. box 385 Burgaw, NC 28425
